Daniel Campana Departure Point

Hello everyone, My name is Daniel Campana and I have just switched majors to Visual Studies.  My work is mainly focused on drawing and painting; however, I have recently acquired an interest in ceramics and pottery.  Before switching to Visual Studies I was an Art Education major.  Because of this, my main motivation for creating artwork was to be able to show my future students the importance of art and the impact it can have on society.  Even though I am no longer in education,  I still feel that this is my main motivation; however, the audience has change to include more than just students.
In my work I like to tell stories and capture human emotion.  I think that in order to get the viewer to think about a certain idea, it is best to tell some sort of a story rather than directly showing them.  Some of the main ideas I like to focus on have to do with being discontented about society and the ways in which we are forced to live our lives.  I also like to tell stories of fantasy and adventure.
When I created work portraying the human figure, I like to focus most of my attention on the faces of the people.  The more detail I can achieve in the face, the more emotion and narrative I can show the viewer.  When I choose to ignore the faces of figures,  there is some sort of significance for doing so.  In the second and third images above, I have chosen to do this in order to focus on the action of the scenes and the foreboding of the setting.  When I draw and paint I like to use a loose style and create heavy contrast.

  1. i remember seeing a lot of your work during our previous classes together, your work is so expressive, especially through how you create marks and your color choices. I'm interested to see how you transfer this style through your photography.
